Our Library Catalog is now available online!
The Antiochian Heritage Library houses approximately 22,000 volumes relating to early Christianity, the theology of the Orthodox Christian Church, Middle Eastern culture, Syriac, Syrian-Arabic and Aramaean Christian history and culture, and Christian-Muslim relations. In addition to the scholarly collection, the library offers resources for families, educators, and those interested in exploring the Orthodox Christian faith.
A start-up grant of $100,000 from the Albert and Rosemary Joseph Foundation, as well as ongoing support from the Order of St. Ignatius of Antioch, has allowed the library to build its collection steadily since its inception in 1987. The library accepts donations of books, periodicals, and other items which are applicable to the subject matter of the library’s core collection as described above.
Significant additions to the library’s resources came in 2009 with donations from three separate sources. First, we received several thousand books from the personal library of Dr. George Atiyeh (1923-2008), who spent nearly three decades as head of the Near East division of the U.S. Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. Next, the Village received the library of the St. Athanasius Academy of Orthodox Theology in Sacramento, California, which has its roots in the historic American Evangelical movement into the Orthodox Christian faith. Then, in July 2009, more than 600 books, both antique and current, as well as antique maps and rare musical recordings, were given to us by Dr. Michael G. Farrow, Vice Chairman of the Department of Sacred Music. Cataloging of these important collections is ongoing.
