Chanting at St. Thekla ChapelByzantine Chanting Camp

Session 1: June 16th - 28th

Session 2: June 30th - July 12th

One of the most beautiful aspects of our Orthodox worship is the hymnography that is sung by chanters and choirs to lead the congregation in prayer. This coming summer, Antiochian Village will offer Byzantine Chant Camp for Sessions One and Two. Registration is open to campers ages 14-17, or entering the 9th grade. Campers will participate in Summer Camp as normal, but will learn the art of Byzantine Chant during the time allotted for Morning Program.

Session 1: Tones 3 and 7 (Grave Mode) in Western Notation

June 30th - July 12th

Emphasis will be placed on learning to sight read western notation using the Greek scale (Ni, Pa, Vou, Gha, Dhi, Ke, Zo, Ni) and chanting liturgical text appropriately.

Campers will also be introduced to various saints who contributed to the liturgical prayers and hymns of the Orthodox Church. Every year a saint is chosen as patron of the summer sessions; this year it will be Saint Ephraim the Syrian. Campers will open each class with the Troparion of St. Ephraim and discuss how every chanter should imitate his example.

The Byzantine Chant Camp will have a maximum of 7 female campers and 7 male campers. Campers will stay in cabins according to age and participate in the regular camping program with the exception of Morning Program and the Hike.

Session 2: June 16th - 28th

This summer there are two options for Chanting Camp during session 2.

Option 1: Byzantine Notation for Beginner and Intermediate Levels

Campers will be introduced to Byzantine Notation (click here see sample).  This is an ancient method for writing liturgical music and is still used today in Churches following the Byzantine tradition. In recent years it has caught the interest of the Chanting Campers at the Antiochian Village. Click here for more information on the history and development of Byzantine Chant. Campers will also have the opportunity to chant during daily services.

The Byzantine Chant Camp will have a maximum of 7 female campers and 7 male campers. Campers will stay in cabins according to age and participate in the regular camping program with the exception of Morning Program and the Hike.
